Night Dive Studios were able to secure the rights to the game and the System Shock franchise in 2013 to release an updated version of System Shock 2 for modern operating systems, including for OS X and Linux, and announced plans to release an Enhanced Edition of the game. On 6 September 2018, a major update of the Enhanced Edition ported it to the Kex Engine, offering additional features such as higher resolutions, mouselook, rebindable keys and use of the high resolution. System Shock 2 had been in intellectual property limbo following the closure of Looking Glass Studios. Like System Shock, gameplay consists of first-person combat and exploration. The development of the game started on the Unity engine and was first announced in 2015 for Windows and consoles. The remake was developed by Nightdive Studios and published by Prime Matter. The game is set aboard a space station in a cyberpunk vision of the year 2072. System Shock is a remake of the 1994 game of the same name. It was directed by Doug Church with Warren Spector serving as producer. System Shock 2 is a genre defining experience that established innovative game-play mechanics that are a staple of the FPS and RPG genre today.
